Owning an exotic car comes with its own set of challenges; a lot of unwanted attention being one of them. There are times when things get so difficult that the situation becomes almost a little too dangerous to handle. Case in point, a video posted by a car spotting account on Instagram a few weeks back shows a Porsche Carrera GT frantically swerving through traffic on a busy freeway trying to outrun a BMW M3 and a Tesla Model S. The caption claims that it’s none other than renowned YouTuber and Cars & Bids founder Doug DeMuro driving his silver Carrera GT in the clip. The video gives the impression that the three cars are dangerously racing against each other on the busy California freeway, putting the lives of others in danger. A lot of people have even posted angry comments on the video, expressing their displeasure with Dough’s irresponsible behavior. However, the YouTuber claims he wasn’t trying to race the other two vehicles.

Looking at the outrage caused by the video, Doug recently posted a comment explaining his side of the story. The YouTuber claims he was being stalked by the BMW and the Tesla, which required frequently changing lanes in an attempt to evade the pursuers. “This video is such a great example of what happens every single time I drive my sports cars – I get followed insanely closely by people (that BMW) who won’t leave me alone and want to race or ‘hang with’ a Carrera GT or Ford GT,” wrote DeMuro. “I try to get away from them, but they refuse to back off. It’s so dangerous and annoying!!!! The recording stopped but eventually, I had to motion to the BMW to get away from me. Please DON’T DO THIS when you see exotic cars on the road. Get a couple of photos, take a long look, but don’t follow nine inches from the bumper for every single lane change and turn!!”

Dough’s explanation sounds genuine and he’s not known for driving irresponsibly, but not everyone on the internet was convinced by it. One of the comments read: “Do better @dougdemuro. Your excuse for driving this way doesn’t hold any water. You don’t have a right to endanger others because you think someone is driving to close to you or trying to race you.” However, there were people who sided with him and shared their own experiences of people hounding them for driving exotic cars. We personally believe that Dough could have just maintained the speed limit and avoided the situation by not paying attention to those pursuing him. While the video appears to be sped up to look dramatic, swerving through traffic in such a manner is never safe.

Doug DeMuro is an American YouTuber who also runs an online automobile-selling platform called Cars & Bids, which lets individuals purchase and sell vehicles in online auctions. His first job was at Porsche’s North American headquarters in Atlanta as a “vehicle allocation manager”, which he left in 2013 to pursue a career in automotive journalism. He launched his YouTube channel in 2016, which currently has over four and a half million subscribers. Earlier this year, Doug was able to secure a $37 million investment for his Cars & Bids and he spent a portion of it to fulfill his lifelong dream – to buy a Porsche Carrera GT.

The Carrera GT is a mid-engine sports car that was produced by Porsche from 2004 to 2006. Only 1270 examples of the Carrera GT were produced, making it a rare and highly desirable automobile. It is also widely claimed to be the last analog supercar ever produced, which further increases its desirability. The Carrera GT is the same car in which Hollywood actor Paul Walker tragically lost his life in 2013. It is powered by a 5.7-liter V10 that produces 603 horsepower and 435 ft-lb of torque. While it was originally priced at less than $500,000, a well-kept example can easily fetch close to $2 million these days.
